The path to your first passport in practice
A battery passport is created entirely in the browser at DPP Hero. You create an account, choose the battery type and work through the seven steps of the editor. Create an account and choose your battery type
Getting started is self-service: create an account, confirm your email, create your first passport. Then you choose one of five battery types: EV, LMT, industrial, stationary energy storage or battery without BMS. This choice is more than a heading, because the field registry shows the mandatory and visible fields that match each type. A passport for a stationary energy storage system asks for different information than one for an e-bike, and you only see what counts for your type.
The seven steps in the editor
The structure follows DIN SPEC 99100 with its seven data categories: identification, materials, carbon footprint, due diligence, circularity, performance and durability, and labeling. Every field is explained, you do not interpret a specification and you do not map attributes by hand. Whatever you do not know yet can stay open for now: the passport remains a draft for as long as you need it to.
Where an open legal question sits behind a step, the editor shows the current status. Take the carbon footprint: the related obligations have not been triggered yet because the EU's methodology and format legal acts are still missing. You can nevertheless capture the values from your life cycle assessment in structured form today and keep them when the legal acts arrive.
Publish gate, publication and QR code
Publication only happens once the passport is complete. The publish gate checks your organization's mandatory data, the completeness of all seven steps and your GS1 identifiers, including the GTIN check digit and the GLN of the production site. On top of that, a blocking schema validation runs against the Battery Passport Data Model v2.0: whatever the schema does not accept does not go live.
After publishing, the passport exists as a public page, without login and at no cost to the viewer. The address is a GS1 Digital Link. You download the QR code as SVG or PNG, for series as a ZIP with up to 500 codes. Every published version is signed and versioned. A public verify endpoint recalculates hash and signature live. What data you need and where it comes from
The editor is the easy part. What matters is what you feed into it. In practice, three sources cover almost everything: your own company, your suppliers and your GS1 licenses. To tick things off before you start, there is the Battery Passport Checklist. On scope: the European Commission guidance on data points by category of 15 August 2026 (version 2.0) lists 71 data points and marks several of them as not to be filled in as of February 2027. That is the order of magnitude to plan with, not hundreds of fields.
From your own company
Master data, model names and production sites usually live in your ERP or in your data sheets. Performance and durability values such as capacity, voltage, cycle life and temperature ranges are in the technical data sheet. The EU declaration of conformity is something you create and are responsible for yourself; in the passport it is stored as a document. For the carbon footprint step you need your life cycle assessment, for due diligence the report along with its evidence.
From suppliers via share link
Cell chemistry, raw material shares and recycled content are often known only to the cell manufacturer. That is what share links are for. You release a single section, the supplier enters their values without a login. Restricted values appear to them as status only, not in clear text. That saves the usual round of spreadsheets by email. As an importer bringing batteries into the EU you collect the manufacturer data the same way. Check that data before publishing. Under Article 77(4) you are liable for accuracy, even if a supplier entered it. Validation is therefore its own process step.
GS1 identifiers with lead time
For publishing, DPP Hero checks your GS1 identifiers. That includes the GTIN check digit and the GLN of the production site. You do not issue these identifiers yourself, they come from your GS1 licenses. Which license your company needs is settled directly with GS1. Do that early: obtaining it is the part of the route no software speeds up. Your draft can grow in the editor in parallel, the GS1 check only applies at publishing.
What belongs in now and what follows later
The first time you fill it in, almost the same question comes up. Do I have to enter values here that keep changing? The regulation separates that cleanly. It is worth knowing this split before you start. Annex XIII holds the battery model data and the individual battery data in separate blocks.
What is fixed when you create the passport
The public block in Annex XIII point 1 describes the model, not the individual unit. It holds rated capacity as well as minimum, nominal and maximum voltage, along with the original power capability and its limits and the expected lifetime in cycles with the reference test used. Added to that are the temperature range when idle, the commercial warranty period for calendar life and the round trip efficiency at the start and at half the cycle life, and finally the internal resistance of cell and pack with the C-rate of the test. These values come from the data sheet and the test report. They apply to all batteries of the same model. Part of them is still waiting for an act. The Commission guidance of 15 August 2026 lists rated capacity among others as “Not to be filled/displayed as of February 2027”. Create such fields, but leave them empty for now.
What changes through use
Annex XIII point 4 also holds data on the individual battery, and that changes. Named are the performance and durability values “when the battery is placed on the market and when its status changes”. Plus the state of health under Article 14, the status of the battery and the data from use. This data is not public but accessible only to persons with a legitimate interest. For filling in that means: at creation you enter the starting condition. You do not need a value maintained daily. Annex XIII grades access by point: point 1 is public, point 2 is visible to persons with a legitimate interest and to the Commission, point 3 to notified bodies, market surveillance authorities and the Commission, point 4 only to persons with a legitimate interest. Who qualifies as a person with a legitimate interest is not settled yet. The implementing act under Article 77(9) decides that, and it is still missing.
Who updates it, and when
Under Article 77(4) the economic operator ensures the data is accurate, complete and up to date. That means whoever places the battery on the market. They may authorize others in writing to act on their behalf. So what triggers an update is not the calendar but the change of status. Where a battery is prepared for re-use or for repurposing, repurposed or remanufactured, the duty passes on under paragraph 7. It falls on whoever places it on the market afterwards. A new passport arises, linked to the original one.
The editor mirrors this split in the performance and durability step. One area takes the static rated values from the manufacturer. A second takes the battery condition with the dynamic readings from a diagnostic report or the battery management system. The condition area can also be filled after publishing. The passport does not have to be created again for that.
What takes time and what does not
The honest answer: it is not the editor that takes time, it is gathering the data. Once the data sheet, life cycle assessment, due diligence report and identifiers are in place, filling in the seven steps is focused work in one sitting, not a project. Auto-save keeps every intermediate state, and a draft can sit as long as needed and grows as soon as new documents arrive.
What does take time are the things outside the editor: an LCA study if none exists yet, answers from cell manufacturers, the internal sign-off of the declaration of conformity and the lead time for GS1 identifiers. These items depend on third parties and internal processes, not on the software. That is exactly why it pays to create the draft early and make the gaps visible instead of waiting for a complete folder: the half-finished passport shows you which requests you need to send today.
Installation and IT, on the other hand, are not a time factor. DPP Hero runs in the browser, with no setup project and no coordination rounds. If you want to create many passports from existing data, you use the CSV import or the REST API aligned with EN 18222; for your first passport you need neither. The 18 February 2027 deadline sounds far away, but the procurement loops with suppliers cannot be compressed. The earlier the first draft exists, the calmer the rest of the path becomes.
Five typical beginner mistakes
These five patterns regularly cost time on a first battery passport, and all five are avoidable:
- Applying for GS1 identifiers too late Publication checks GS1 identifiers such as the GTIN check digit and the GLN of the production site, and both come from licenses with their own application process. If you sort this out only at the end, you have a finished draft and still have to wait. Clarify early with GS1 which license your company needs.
- Planning the passport as a PDF collection A battery passport is a structured data set, not a document archive. If you collect values in PDFs and spreadsheets first, you end up retyping them into fields later anyway. Better to capture them directly in the editor; documents such as the declaration of conformity go in as attachments at the place provided for them.
- Collecting supplier data by email Excel attachments create competing versions, follow-up questions and transcription errors. Share links release exactly one section to the supplier, without a login, and their values land in the right field of the passport with no detour.
- Waiting for the open CO₂ legal acts The fact that the methodology and format acts for the carbon footprint are still missing does not move the 18 February 2027 deadline. The other categories are independent of this, and a passport can be created and published in full today.
- Confusing the registry with the passport The EU registry is a directory, it does not replace the passport. Battery registration is still locked there on the EU side, and later only an eIDAS-verified economic operator may register. That verification needs lead time too.

Who answers for it in the end, and who comes asking
At some point creating a passport stops being about fields. It becomes the question of who stands behind the content. The regulation answers it clearly. And the answer does not change when you hand the work over.
The responsibility stays with you
Article 77(4) puts it plainly. The economic operator placing the battery on the market ensures the data is accurate, complete and up to date. They may authorize others in writing to act on their behalf. That is the point: a service provider may enter data, the duty stays with you. The German penalty provision hooks into this too. Section 60(2) number 29 BattDG names the breach of Article 77(4) sentence 1 expressly. The notice comes to you, not to your software. When the battery moves into a second life, responsibility moves too. Under paragraph 7 it passes to whoever places the repurposed or remanufactured battery on the market. For residual value the regulation itself sets the yardstick: Article 14(2) grants read access to the state of health data in the battery management system, expressly including to evaluate the residual value and the possibility of further use of the battery.
Who asks and what they can order
Checks come from the market surveillance authorities, in Germany the Umweltbundesamt. Article 79 sets out the path. First corrective measures within a set deadline, withdrawal from the market or recall. If nothing happens, the authorities restrict or prohibit making it available themselves. For creating passports that means two things. Record which version was published when. And make sure a correction does not invalidate the printed QR code.
What you can lean on while filling in the fields
There is help on how to fill a field. The Battery Pass consortium, funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy, spelled out the Annex XIII fields, most recently in the Content Guidance of December 2023, plus a Technical Guidance in 2024 and a software demonstrator; DIN DKE SPEC 99100 followed in January 2025, and the project ended in March 2025. These papers are interpretive aids, not legal acts. What binds is the Regulation, Annex XIII and the Commission acts. What happens to the passport at the end of the battery life?
That depends on what happens to the battery, not on a deadline. Article 77(8) says: the passport is deleted once the battery has been recycled. If it is repurposed or remanufactured instead, paragraph 7 requires a new passport. It is linked to the old one. So do not count on a fixed retention period, count on the life of the battery. Plan for the second-life case from the start.
Which identifier does the passport need and how does it reach the battery?
Article 77(3) requires a unique identifier under ISO/IEC 15459-1 to 15459-6 or equivalent standards. The passport is retrieved through it. It is carried by the QR code, which Article 13(6) requires for all batteries from 18 February 2027. Annex VI Part C requires strong color contrast and a size common phone readers handle. Whether you print, etch or engrave is up to you. It only has to stay legible across the lifetime.
Who inside the company has to be involved in the first passport?
More departments than you first think, and that comes from Annex XIII itself. Master data and labeling come from product development. Composition and material data from purchasing and quality assurance. The due diligence entries from purchasing or legal. Performance and durability values from the test report. Identifier and QR code touch production and label printing. Set the first passport up as a pure IT project and you notice while filling it that the data sits elsewhere. In practice a small cross-departmental team is enough. One person decides where the single source per field sits. The build-or-buy decision then almost makes itself.
