About GS1 Germany GmbH

GS1 Germany GmbH, based in Cologne, is the German branch of the global GS1 network. It is the official provider of EAN/GTIN barcodes in Germany and manages 24 standards across 25 industries. Over 2 million companies worldwide use GS1 standards for product identification, data exchange, and supply chain processes.

GS1 PINE is their B2B solution marketplace that connects solution providers with retail and industry companies. The portal lists solutions across categories like master data management, track & trace, labeling, and sustainability. DPP Hero is listed on GS1 PINE as a GS1 Solution Partner in the categories battery passport, digital product passport, and serialization.

The hard facts: founded on 19 March 1974 as Centrale für Coorganisation. Based in Cologne since 1974, today at Stolberger Straße 108 a. Legal form GmbH, registered at the Cologne local court under HRB 6276. Shareholders in equal parts are the Markenverband and the EHI Retail Institute. Managing director is Thomas Fell. By its own account GS1 Germany serves over 95,000 customers in Germany (as of July 2026).

For the battery passport one thing matters above all: you need two different identifiers. The GTIN identifies the battery model. The GLN identifies a place, namely your company as a legal entity. If the manufacturing site is a different one, those are two different GLNs. A company identification alone contains no GTIN. That is the most common mis-order. Which packages exist and what they cost changes; the binding information comes from the GS1 Germany price pages, not from us. Applications go directly to GS1 Germany. You choose a package by the number of GTINs needed. Depending on the package a one-off provisioning charge is added, scaled by package size, plus an annual fee scaled by total turnover. The entry package for small companies comes without the one-off amount. A GLN for identifying your company is included in the packages.

Besides GTIN and GLN, GS1 maintains further standards around the passport. Among them the SSCC for shipping units, the DataMatrix code as an alternative on small surfaces and EPCIS for event data along the chain, as well as EANCOM and GS1 XML for message exchange. For the battery passport the regulation requires none of them. It requires a unique identifier under ISO/IEC 15459 and a QR code under Annex VI Part C. Anyone already working with GS1 can use these building blocks.
